Every year in December this happens. Sober time isn't so sober anymore when your company Christmas party is coming up. With these dos and don'ts, you'll be prepared for the next party.
Please don't do this – what not to do at Christmas party:
Absence without excuse
In principle, the Christmas party takes place outside working hours and is therefore not mandatory. However, most people are expected to come. If you already have other plans for the day, cancel in advance as you will not be able to attend. But what doesn't work at all is missing without an excuse. Even if you become ill in a short space of time or something else comes up, please let us know and apologize.
Please no combat drinkers
Christmas celebrations almost inevitably mean alcohol. In principle, a glass of wine or punch is not prohibited, but you need to use alcohol responsibly. Because, exceptionally, Christmas party tables are not for dancing. Know your limit and, if necessary, less is always more.
Cell Phone Etiquette
The company Christmas party only happens once a year. Funny videos of cats and the like can stay in your pocket that night. Show respect by being present and talking to your colleagues.
Be careful when taking photos too. Of course, you can create a great memory with group selfies. You cannot press the shutter button without being prompted and post the photo to your social media accounts.
Flirting, hugging, etc.
Sure, some couples meet at work, but (drunk) Christmas party doesn't necessarily have to be the go-ahead. Don't rush into things you'll regret the next day. “What happens at the Christmas party stays at the Christmas party” is easier said than done.
Excessive gifts
If it is common practice at your work to give gifts to each other, you should stick to the budget. You embarrass everyone with very expensive gifts.
That’s right – what to do at the Christmas party:
be on time
Especially if the Christmas party starts with dinner, you must arrive on time. Of course, it may happen that you get stuck in a traffic jam or miss the bus. If you're a few minutes late, no one will be mad at you. But let us know in advance why you will be late and how much.
Choose the right clothes
Ugly Christmas sweater, miniskirt or suit? If there is a note about “dress code” on the invitation, you should definitely pay attention and choose your outfit accordingly. Of course you shouldn't dress up, you have to feel comfortable in your clothes. If there is no official dress code, it is best to talk to your colleagues and adapt to them. So at least you're not alone with your clothing choice.
Have good conversations
You can't go wrong with topics like sports, hobbies, and yes, even the weather. Actively listen to your interlocutor and show genuine interest. Also approach colleagues from other departments; Valuable friendships can emerge from this. Either way, you see your close team every day.
You shouldn't necessarily talk about business topics like the next raise or controversial topics like religion or politics at the Christmas party. Gossiping about colleagues or superiors is also a no-no.
Participate in activities
Some companies organized fun activities for the end of year party, such as games or photo booths with costumes. You should definitely participate in this, even if you think dressing up is stupid. Memories like these strengthen team spirit.
Show your appreciation
Early on, you greet your boss with a handshake. During speeches or presentations, please do not boredly look at your cell phone or gossip with your colleagues, but listen carefully. It won't take that long. When leaving, the best thing is to say goodbye to your superiors in person and thank them for the night.
The duration of the celebration varies according to the culture of each company. It's best to focus on colleagues you get along with. If you have to work the next day, midnight is a good time to leave the party.
