A man was arrested along with his son after the boy allegedly shot another child with a gun found in his father's vehicle in Sacramento, California.
The victim, also 10, was found by authorities bleeding from his neck and head in a parking lot around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, CNN reports.
The boy was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“Several witnesses told police that the person(s) responsible ran to an apartment to seek refuge,” the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The police therefore arrested Arkete Davis, 53, and her 10-year-old son.
During their investigation, authorities discovered that the boy allegedly went to his father's vehicle to get his cigarettes but grabbed his handgun.
The child then allegedly bragged to the victim that his father had a gun before shooting in his direction.
The gun was later found in a nearby trash can.
Mr. Davis was prohibited from owning a weapon at the time of the incident.
He faces multiple charges related to carrying a weapon and endangering his son.
The latter is held in a juvenile detention center and charged with murder.
In total, more than 1,600 children and teenagers were killed by gun violence in the United States in 2023, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive website.
