The number of asylum seekers has passed the 100,000 mark. However: In November there was a clear drop. According to the interior department, there were 11,890 requests this month.

The number of asylum applications dropped significantly in November. According to the Department of the Interior, 11,890 applications were filed this month, more than a third fewer than in October. It was the weakest month since July. A total of 101,757 entries have been submitted so far this year.

2022 more than 100,000 asylum applications

More than 91 percent of asylum seekers were men. More than two-thirds were aged between 18 and 35. Most requests were made by Afghans, over 22,000. They are followed by Syrians and Indians (about 17,900 each) and Tunisians (nearly 12,500). Despite the end of visa-free travel for Tunisians in Serbia, more than 1,000 applications were still being filed by citizens of the country in November.

Asylum was granted some 12,200 times from January to November. In addition, around 5,000 people were given subsidiary protection and over 2,000 people were given humanitarian stays. A total of 19,425 people were able to remain in the country. There were legally negative decisions in the asylum process in more than 26,600 cases, so it is revealed that negative also includes, for example, all those who later benefit from subsidiary protection.

Tunisians almost no chance of asylum

Syrians also have very good chances of gaining asylum, with a recognition rate of a good two-thirds (69.4). Although Afghans are rarely granted asylum, they are by far the largest group of people entitled to subsidiary protection. Tunisians and Indians with two positive decisions in the past year or even just one have almost no chance of asylum.

High number of asylum requests

It is already clear that the total number of asylum applications is extremely high. Compared to 2020, they have increased nearly sevenfold in just eleven months. What distinguishes this year’s refugee movement from previous ones is, of course, that many asylum seekers leave the country after registration because they have other destinations.

At the beginning of December, 92,560 people were in primary care. However, most of them are Ukrainians who do not fall under the category of asylum seekers. More recently, around 56,000 people in Ukraine were supposed to receive basic services.
