A 14-year-old boy died after falling off a New York City subway train. He attempted to climb onto the roof of the moving device, a dangerous tendency dubbed “subway surfing.”
The boy fell off a train in Queens, New York. He suffered a fatal head injury, The Mirror newspaper reported.
He was then taken to the hospital, where his death was pronounced.
His identity remains unknown. Authorities do not know if he was accompanied or alone.
According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), this death is the seventh this year related to this popular new trend of “subway surfing” on social networks, particularly on TikTok, where teenagers are having fun surfing on the roof of to climb trains. These videos had already generated millions of views at the time of writing this article.
Last week another teenager, Brian Crespo, died while surfing the subway and his friend was seriously injured.
According to the MTA, in February 2023, 52 people used public transport while not boarding the train, and 58 cases were recorded in January 2023. Those are numbers that give New York Mayor Eric Adams goosebumps.
The latter has also asked TikTok’s management to remove from its platform the videos promoting this dangerous activity. TikTok expressed its condolences to the relatives and then explained that these videos will be removed from the social network as soon as they are found.
