Iran blames Kurdish groups for attack in Isfahan

Following a drone attack on an armaments factory in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, Tehran blamed Kurdish groups for the attack. The attack was carried out “with the participation and guidance of Kurdish opposition groups”, reported today the Nour-News portal, considered the mouthpiece of the Iranian Security Council. The attackers received help from the Israeli secret service Mossad. Iran’s claims could not be independently verified.

In recent months, Iran has attacked positions in the Kurdish regions of Iraq’s northern neighbor with rockets and drones. Tehran accuses opposition groups of supporting recent protests critical of the system in the country. Conflict with Kurdish separatists, on the other hand, has been simmering for years.

“WSJ”: Israel behind the attack

The Iranian region of Kurdistan has been a stronghold of protests since the protests began in September 2022. The wave of protests was triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody. She had been arrested by the Morality Police for violating Islamic dress codes. In recent weeks, however, street protests have subsided again. Many women are now expressing their discontent through civil disobedience – for example by ignoring the mandatory headscarf.

The “Wall Street Journal” (“WSJ”) reported after the drone attack on Sunday night that Israel was behind the attack. The Israeli army has not commented on this. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Tehran has called Israel its archenemy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also describes Iran as the “most important enemy” and sees a “terrorist regime” in the political leadership.
