The majority of asylum seekers continue to arrive between ports of entry on Quebec’s Roxham Road.

This has put pressure on Quebec’s publicly funded services and housing.

Prime Minister François Legault has also sent a letter to Justin Trudeau urging him to repatriate all people entering the country via Roxham Road to other provinces in Canada.

Since June 30, 2022, the Canadian government has relocated a number of asylum seekers from Quebec to four Ontario cities, namely Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Windsor and Cornwall, to ease pressure on Quebec due to the increase in the number of asylum seekers, entering the province.

To date, 702 people have been transferred to Ottawa, 618 to Windsor, 2,841 to Niagara Falls, and 1,396 to Cornwall, for a total of 5,557 people transferred to Ontario as of February 13, 2023.
