Lessons learned from the energy crisis – further development of the order of merit principle to avoid price extremes – safety planning for industry
Vienna (OTS) – Today’s proposal from the European Commission draws lessons from last year’s unreasonably high energy costs. “Excessive price fluctuations have been an extreme burden on Europe as an industrial location. The new proposal aims to prevent such eruptions in the future and thus relieve the domestic industry,” says Peter Koren, deputy general secretary of the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) and head of infrastructure, transport, resources and energy.
The Commission’s proposal basically follows the much-discussed principle of order of merit. This is quite understandable, as this model basically guarantees planning stability and security in pricing, away from times of crisis. “With the new instruments, the pricing system must be suitable for extreme situations. This aims to guarantee a certain degree of stability for the national industry, reducing the risk of extreme price fluctuations like last year”, adds Koren. Now the announced measures must be implemented quickly to bring the European electricity market back into calmer waters.
