British and German planes intervened on Monday to escort a Russian military plane.
British and German warplanes intercepted a Russian supply plane near Estonian airspace in an uneventful maneuver on Monday, the British government said, as quoted by Spanish news agency Europa Press.
The two Typhoons of the Royal Air Force and Air Force quickly took off to escort the Russian plane, an IL78 Midas, connecting Saint Petersburg with Kaliningrad after the latter failed to respond to calls from Estonian air traffic controllers.
routine operation
A second plane, this time a commercial plane, also had to be escorted because it was flying too close to Estonian airspace, according to the UK MoD.
Routine operations under the aegis of NATO “at this time of tension” related to the conflict in Ukraine, the British authorities say.
These interventions follow Monday’s incident in which a US military drone was shot down in the Black Sea after being hit by a Russian fighter jet.
