SHAWINIGAN. The Fondation de la Cité de l’énergie has expanded its annual school competition and the new version “Ecological Innovations” is now aimed at all pre-school and primary school children throughout the Mauricie region.
In addition to the various teaching schools in the region, the competition is also aimed at children attending English-language schools and the territory’s Aboriginal communities.
The competition, launched in 1997, was originally intended for young people from the Center de services scolaire de l’Énergie.
The theme this year is innovation and energy efficiency. The organizing committee invites students to let their imagination run wild by presenting an innovative idea related to responsible energy production or use. Students are invited to make an artistic creation in the form of a drawing, collage, model or poster, depending on the cycle.
Winners will win multiple prizes including visits to the Cité de l’énergie, children’s books, science kits, etc. These will be announced on May 10th during an awards night.
“We wanted to breathe new life into the competition and reinvent it. This was made possible thanks to a grant from the Quebec Department of Business, Innovation and Energy and a partnership with Hydro-Quebec. The competition will be held every year and we chose eco-innovation because children will be tomorrow’s managers who will shape the world. Ecological issues are increasingly becoming the focus of our efforts. We want children to be creative and to think about solutions for tomorrow’s world,” says the Director General of the Cité de l’énergie, Sandie Letendre.
A general public component, aimed at young people ages 5 to 14 from across Quebec, will also launch in June 2023.
