The risks and adverse impacts of man-made climate change have already materialized and will continue to increase with every step of global warming. That’s the drastic prediction of dozens of researchers at the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Some future changes are inevitable or even irreversible, but they can be limited with rapid and sustained global reductions in greenhouse gases, says the latest report. After six partial reports since 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change today published the comprehensive synthesis report.
The report “underscores the urgency for more ambitious action,” said IPCC President Hoesung Lee. Five years after the first publication, the challenge is even greater. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will continue to rise, but current plans are insufficient to tackle climate change, the IPCC has warned.
