The pilot of UA Flight 23 was convinced he was the 5th plane on 9/11…was in denial for years

A United pilot scheduled to fly on 9/11 says he spent years denying the possibility that hijackers attacked his plane that day… but he’s more convinced now than ever.

We talked Tom Mannello Monday on TMZ Live about that fateful day, as well as a theory he’s fully on board — namely that he and his crew on United Flight 23 were attacked by terrorists on 9/11… something he says fully believe that it was not so until recently.

What changed his mind was a new documentary we produced that’s airing tonight on FOX – TMZ Investigates 9/11: The Fifth Plane (9pm ET/PT, 8pm CT) …which delves deep into all the suspect circumstances surrounding the ground flight activity.

It’s a story the United crew hadn’t discussed publicly before, and hearing the flight attendants’ perspective changes everything for Mannello.

As he explains to us, he was content to accept that whatever turned out to be pure coincidence… but after we did a little investigating and reporting, he says he’s a believer.

There are several elements that suggest United 23 are in the crosshairs of evil actors – including a group of suspicious passengers who were keen to get off the ground as soon as possible.

Another red flag…the fact that eyewitnesses saw uniformed men running through the cabin after the plane was evacuated and sealed – officials say the World Trade Center was under attack.

Then the FBI discovered a mysterious open hatch on the plane.

Agents then also questioned all of Flight 23’s flight attendants… also, box cutters were found on an adjacent plane — all of which is more than enough for Mannello to entertain the notion that they’re next. He says he didn’t accept it for years because the FBI was seemingly inactive.

At this point, however, he says there’s just too much evidence not to accept the obvious. And yet TM explains why he kept flying after that…unlike the others, who were so devastated they never flew professionally again.
