According to the CDC, at least eight people have lost their sight, and some have had their eyeballs removed. So far, at least 68 people in 16 states have been infected. dr Laroche says the products are preservative-free, “usually most eye drops contain preservatives to prevent bacterial contamination.”
Symptoms can include yellow or green discharge in the eyes, discomfort, redness, increased sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. dr Laroche says people who use eye drops should always follow these steps: make sure the eye drops are made by US manufacturers, wash your hands before and after using eye drops, don’t touch the dropper with your eye , close the eye drop bottle tightly. Use the drops after each use within 1 month after opening and store the eye drops away from heat, light and moisture.
dr Laroche adds, “Most of the millions of Americans who use eye drops need not be concerned about this, they need to be aware.” Laroche also says if you get serious red eyes, pain, or worsening vision, see a doctor right away.
