What makes Finland the happiest country in the world? Journal of the Center of the World

According to the ranking, Finland is the happiest country in the world

According to the latest Global Happiness Report 2023, in March of the same year, Finland was voted the happiest country in the world for the sixth year in a row.

The ranking, prepared by the United Nations Organization, is based on the evaluation of life measured by the Cantril ladder, that is, a scale numbered from zero to ten from bottom to top. The best life is at the top and the worst life is at the bottom.

In this survey, Finland appears in first place, followed by Denmark in second place and Iceland in third place. Brazil only appears in 49th place. Afghanistan remains in last place 137th, the same position since 2020.

What makes Finland the happiest country?

Lower income inequality, very high social benefits, freedom of choice and low levels of corruption are some of the factors that make Finns the happiest people in the world.

Besides these reasons, the public healthcare system that is highly decentralized and the small private healthcare sector are other features of the country that make people feel happier. Public transport is cheap and reliable, and Helsinki Airport is considered the best in Northern Europe.

Other places compared to Finland

Some other countries, such as Norway and Hungary, have similar wage inequality, but Finns are happier. Why?

According to the World Inequality Database, the top 10% of people in Finland earn about 33% of the country’s total income, while the same group earns 36% in the UK and 46% in the US. In the most unequal countries, there is much less left for the rest of the population, meaning that the larger the number of rich, the greater the fear of these rich.

In addition, freedom is also of great importance to people. This explains why Turkey and India have happiness levels below what one would predict based on their economic inequality.

There is a Finnish proverb that fits the situation in the country: Onnellisuus on se paikka puuttuvaisuuden ja yltälkylläisyyden välillä Happiness is a place between too little and too much.
