Hyundai has pleaded guilty to six separate counts

Automaker Hyundai has pleaded guilty to six counts of violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act and faces a $360,000 fine.

The six charges relate to communications about safety deficiencies that Hyundai allegedly failed to send within 60 days as required by law, according to a statement released Tuesday by Transport Canada.

However, the company sent out the reminders in 2020 and 2021, albeit not in a timely manner.

“It is alarming that on six separate occasions Hyundai failed to provide vehicle owners with timely notice of a recall and as a result Transport Canada has filed criminal charges against the company,” said Transport Canada Minister Omar Alghabra.

“With Hyundai’s guilty plea and fine, Transport Canada now considers this matter closed. The department will continue to closely monitor Hyundai’s compliance with Transport Canada requirements.
