Tom Holland has been sober for 16 months.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 26-year-old star opened up about his role as criminal Danny Sullivan in the new psychological thriller series The Crowded Room and the impact it has had on his mental health. He revealed he had been alcohol free for a year and four months and said that “learning about mental health and its effects and talking to psychiatrists about Danny and Billy’s issues was so life enlightening for his own life speak.”

The Spider-Man actor revealed that the mental aspect of the job was taxing and it took him a long time to “recover” from his role and come back to reality. Nine months into filming, he couldn’t tear himself away from Danny Sullivan.

“I saw myself in him, in my personal life. I remember having a little panic at home when I thought I was going to shave my head because I thought it was the only way out of the role,” he explained.

He added, “We were in the middle of filming, so I decided not to do it… It was something I had never experienced before.”

The series, inspired by Daniel Keyes’ 1981 book The Minds of Billy Milligan, tells the story of a young man arrested for a shocking crime and an unlikely detective who must solve the mystery before the true criminal never strikes again.
