After breaking this taboo on numerous occasions in soap operas such as Amor à Vida and Malhação, Globo appears to have backed down from his decision to feature homoaffective kissing in his soap operas. At least that’s how it looked after the chapter of “Vai na Fé” was broadcast this Wednesday (10).
A scene previously announced in the plot synopses and on the broadcaster’s portal, GShow, was eventually chopped up. The sequence involved Helena (Priscila Sztejnman) and Clara (Regiane Alves), whose story Rosane Svartman told very gently. The characters even exchanged a kiss to end the two boys’ bad joke.
This Wednesday Clara and Helena would kiss “for real, after a kiss”, announced the broadcaster’s website. However, what was seen was a perforated scene. As they talked, one of them was lying down, the other appeared to be walking towards the kiss, which was censored. Clara, played by Regiane Alves, stands up with her hand over her mouth to explain why she hesitated, but the truth is that the sequence was completely meaningless and the cut was very obvious.
Taking to Twitter, Regiane Alves even tried to throw in a hot towel when she saw the outrage the censorship was sparking among fans of the series. “Slow and steady… step by step to build a future where all forms of love can be accepted and celebrated,” he wrote.
But the truth is that in mid2023, there is no need to go slow and steady on issues affecting equality. Globe got it wrong. And it was wrong. Riots broke out on social networks and the topic was one of the most commented on worldwide on Twitter.
