- Moscow “continues to terrorize Ukraine” with its nightly attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday accused the overnight destruction of 36 Russian drones. “None of them achieved their goal,” he said. Since early May, Russia has stepped up its nighttime missile and drone strikes.
- The head of Russia’s private Wagner militia, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said Thursday that his men had begun handing over their positions in Bakhmout to regular Russian army troops. “Until June 1st, most [de nos unités] will be moved to the rear bases. We are handing over the positions, the ammunition and everything in them to the military,” he said. Mr Prigojine on Saturday claimed the capture of the city, the epicenter of fighting in the east.
- “Wagner’s units remain in the town of Bakhmout. Our soldiers control the Avion district in the southwestern suburbs,” it said on Thursday Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine Hanna Maliar still denies the city’s total loss.
- Russian diplomacy on Thursday announced its decision to close the Consulate General of Sweden in Saint Petersburg and the Consulate General of Russia in Gothenburg, Sweden, effective September 1. According to Moscow, this measure is a reaction to Stockholm’s “confrontational policy”. The expulsion of five Swedish diplomats was also announcedfollowing a similar measure taken against Russian diplomats in April.
- Washington on Wednesday approved the sale of Nasam’s advanced surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine for $285 million (265 million euros) to strengthen the country’s air defense. The US Congress has yet to give its approval.
- Two Russian armed groups fighting on the Ukrainian side who pledged to invade a Russian border area on Monday boasted the “success” of their operation on Wednesdaywhich, in their opinion, showed the weakness of the Russian defenses. Moscow on Wednesday promised an “extremely determined” response in the event of fresh armed raids.
