Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned as leader of the ruling party. Defense Minister Milos Vucevic was elected as the party’s new leader. “Whatever you do, I will always be with you and by your side,” Vucic said today at a congress of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
“Needs a different approach”
“A different approach is needed to gather a greater number of forces from those who want to fight for the victory of a patriotic and victorious Serbia,” said Vucic. Despite the resignation, the 53-year-old remains president of the Balkan country.
The SNS won last year’s parliamentary elections with a landslide. However, the party has been repeatedly accused of corruption. Vucic is a co-founder of the SNS and has been leader of the party since 2012.
Vucic more popular than the party
Vucic had already announced that he would start a national movement that would include prominent intellectuals, artists and other public figures. Such a movement is expected to gradually merge with the SNS.
According to analysts, Vucic is significantly more popular than his party. A new coalition would help give a new image to the SNS, plagued by corruption scandals.
