INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two-time champion Takuma Sato led a strong performance from the Chip Ganassi Racing quartet in final practice for the Indianapolis 500 on Friday while Graham Rahal and Katherine Legge worked feverishly to get up to speed ahead of race day.

Sato set a fast lap of 227.855mph early in the session and his teammate Scott Dixon was just behind while pole-sitter Alex Palou was fourth on the speed chart. Marcus Ericsson, the defending champion of the race, wasn’t far behind for the Ganassi stable, who are looking to give their team owner their sixth win at ‘racing’s greatest spectacle’.

“We’re better than most,” Ganassi said ahead of the two-hour Carb Day session. “Hopefully it will be like that in the race.”

The field of 33 cars completed 2,355 laps on a warm, sunny day, although many pulled the plug early as the track was a little tricky. At one point Santino Ferrucci lost patience on the warm-up track behind Alexander Rossi and walked around him. He then saw Rossi pass him so low on the track that his left tires landed in the grass.

“The intensity had increased. “Everyone ran races today and practiced, so to speak,” said Josef Newgarden from Team Penske, “which is good.” But there were probably a few moments that you don’t want to experience.”

Felix Rosenqvist of the strong Arrow McLaren team, which has been pushing the Ganassi team for the past two weeks, was among those to graduate early. Rosenqvist was happy with his car but didn’t want to endanger it unnecessarily.

“We feel good,” said the Swedish rider, who was fourth a year ago and will be third on Sunday. “It got a little tricky because people were walking out there on the lawn, so we were like, ‘Let’s park it.'”

It turned out to be a good idea. It wasn’t more than 10 minutes before Devlin DeFrancesco had a flat tire and sparks were flying out the back of his car. He managed to keep it off the wall and avoided further damage.

“It was an old phrase,” DeFrancesco said of the tires. “We will start the race well.”

Legge, who suffered a training accident alongside Stefan Wilson on Monday, continued to struggle. She was granted a special 15-minute session Thursday alongside Graham Rahel, who was replacing the injured Wilson in the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing action, and heard a “clicking” noise in the car. Then on Friday she came to a standstill on the back straight due to a loose tyre.

Rahal was buried deep in the speed chart, although raw numbers can be misleading as drivers optimize their cars in different ways. Some never manage to set a clean lap as they practice getting through traffic one last time before the race.

Still, it was a crucial session for Rahal, who failed to qualify his own Rahal Letterman Lanigan car last weekend. The long-time Honda driver was always turning his first laps in a Chevrolet car, and Rahal had a long list of things to check. He also spent a lot of time working on pit stops with a whole new crew.

“I feel like we have a very big chance,” Rahal said. “I just need a few laps to get a feel for it. I wouldn’t have done that if I didn’t think there was a good chance of winning it. I don’t need participation trophies, do I? I want to win this.”

Clean up, aisle 3

Ryan Hunter-Reay had to pit in the middle of the session when liquid started spilling out of his car. His crew determined it was a relatively minor transmission leak that needed fixing, but IndyCar apparently didn’t let the car back on track.

“The guys are kind of shocked that they shut us down for this. We didn’t have a single problem all month,” Hunter-Reay said. “We lost an hour of practice but I was really happy with the #23 car. Better it happened today than Sunday.”

ANDRETTI DAY

Marco Andretti posted on social media that he is fine after it was revealed he was involved in a car crash on 16th Street, which runs outside of turns 1 and 2, the night before. However, his Lamborghini Urus was totaled.

On track, Andretti set a fast lap that kept up with Ericsson, Rosenqvist and several of the race favorites.

EXCUSE

RC Enerson, who drives once for Abel Motorsports, got some much-needed track time on Friday. But the rookie also gained important experience in the pits, and it seemed necessary. Enerson came in once and almost stopped in the wrong pit lane, but swerved again at the last moment and found the right pit.

“I think we have a strong car. It’s just going to be more learning for me,” Enerson said, explaining that he had a hard time telling multiple teams in red uniforms apart. “I have to get in the habit of looking for the box earlier.”
