Miami, June 21 (EFE). – Tropical Storm Bret, the second of this season in the Atlantic, strengthened before entering the Caribbean Sea and its maximum sustained winds hit 65 miles per hour (95 km/h) on Wednesday.

In the last few hours, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued tropical storm monitoring recommendations (cyclone transit in approximately 48 hours) for Barbados, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia, and updated the rest of the Antilles islands on Bret’s progress.

Bret, which was approximately 500 miles (815 km) from Barbados this morning, is moving west at a speed of nearly 16 mph (26 m/h) and will maintain that course for the next few days.

According to the forecast, Bret’s center will move across parts of the Lesser Antilles starting Thursday afternoon and across the Caribbean Sea on Friday.

As for the winds, it’s possible they’ll get a little stronger, the NHC said, but it’s no longer warning of a possible hurricane build-up like it did on Tuesday.

A tropical depression-turned-tropical depression between the eastern tip of Jamaica and the La Guajira Peninsula (Colombia and Venezuela) appears in the cone of Bret’s trajectory on Sunday.

Tropical gale force winds are stretching up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center and will be felt in the Lesser Antilles monitored area starting Thursday.

From Guadalupe in the south to Grenada, including Barbados, rainfall amounts of up to 254mm are possible through Saturday, with the risk of flash flooding, particularly in higher areas, and also isolated flooding in cities.

In addition to Bret, the NHC monitors an extensive low-pressure area halfway between the west coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles, which satellite images show is best organized at night.

Environmental conditions appear to favor the formation of a tropical depression in the coming days. EFE
