Amazon.com Inc. AMZN announced late Monday that the first of its new custom-built electric delivery vans from Rivian Automotive Inc. RIVN are arriving in Europe, initially launching in Germany. More than 300 last-mile electric delivery vans are coming to Munich, Berlin and Dusseldorf “in the coming weeks,” Amazon said, adding to a fleet of thousands of electric vans already in service in Europe. Amazon announced last year that it plans to invest more than €1 billion ($1.09 billion) in electrifying its European transportation network. Amazon began rolling out its custom Rivian electric delivery trucks in the US last summer and has more than 3,000 delivery trucks delivering packages across the US. The company aims to deploy 100,000 Rivian electric delivery vehicles, which it was one of the early backers of, which Amazon said will be globally by 2030. Rivian and Amazon shares rose 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively, in after-hours trading. Rivian ended the regular trading day with a 17% rally after the company reported nearly tripling shipments and more than tripling year-over-year in production data in the second quarter.
