After the mass protests in Iran, the moral police disappeared from the streets. Starting today, she must again monitor the headscarf requirement for women. The protests were triggered by the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in police custody.
Iranian authorities have announced the return of notorious moral guardians to enforce the headscarf requirement. From Sunday, police units responsible for morality will take action against offenders across the country with foot and car patrols, ISNA news agency reported, citing an Iranian police spokesman.
Amini died in police custody
After massive protests in the fall of 2022 against the country’s political and religious leadership, the notorious units disappeared from the streets of major cities. The demonstrations were triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman died in police custody after being arrested for breaking Islamic dress codes. Iran’s security apparatus brutally cracked down on the protests.
In recent months, many women have ignored the headscarf requirement, also as a sign of silent protest. The state has reacted, among other things, with a controversial bill that will soon be voted on in parliament. The law provides new and severe penalties for violations.
