Coast Guard searches for Carnival cruise ship passenger who fell overboard

The US Coast Guard has launched a search for a 30-year-old man who fell overboard from the cruise ship Carnival Elation off the coast of Florida on Sunday morning, officials said.

According to the Coast Guard, both air and sea teams are searching for the man who went overboard about 95 miles east of Melbourne, Florida.

According to a Carnival spokesman, the man, a passenger on the cruise ship, jumped off the ship as the ship was returning to Jacksonville on Sunday. The man’s travel companion told crew members late in the afternoon that he was missing after not being seen for the whole day.

Crew members searched the ship and reviewed surveillance cameras to find the man, the Carnival spokesman said. They contacted authorities on shore when they found the man had jumped from the ship.

It was recommended to continue the cruise to Jacksonville. The Carnival Elation was on a four-day voyage to the Bahamas and returned to its homeport of Jacksonville on Monday morning.

Officials have not publicly identified the missing man.

A 35-year-old man fell overboard on a cruise ship in May. The man fell from a Carnival Magic cruise ship about 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Fla. The search for him was called off a few days later. In early May, an 18-year-old from Louisiana fell overboard from a boat during a sunset cruise in the Bahamas, authorities said. The Coast Guard also called off their search for the teenager.
