“The Nun II” opens with $32.6 million to offset declining box office due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes
The opening weekend of “The Nun II” saw box office declines, with ticket sales of $32.6 million.
The horror sequel starring Taissa Farmiga (29) and Storm Reid (20) achieved this respectable number thanks to the first film in the series in 2018.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have banned actors and writers from promoting films.
This results in a lack of soundbites, interviews, red carpets and other advertising that would otherwise increase the exposure of films.
The sequel grossed $38.5 million before commercials and commercials.

The first Nun film grossed $53.8 million, but benefited from its stars being able to promote the film.
Given the strange season Hollywood is currently going through, the inclusion of Nun II is an answered request for theater owners, especially since many of the summer’s major films have been delayed due to the strike.
“Dune: Part Two,” “Challengers” and “Kraven the Hunter” have all been postponed as the stars need to promote the films.
The Nun films are part of The Conjuring universe, with the demon nun Valak first appearing in The Conjuring 2.
The Nun II is about Farmiga’s sister Irene and takes place five years after the events of the first film.
Irene befriends the young nun Debra (Reid), who is experiencing a crisis of faith. The two cloth women are asked by the Vatican to perform another miracle.
As it turns out, the evil Valak wasn’t banished to Hell and is bringing terror to places across Europe.
Priests are brutally murdered and Irene and Debra must find a way to send Valak back to Hell.

Reid spoke about working on the project during an interview with Collider in January, where she expressed that the character she played in The Nun 2 was “incredible.”
The Euphoria star said: “I think she really adds a bit of funkiness to the story and I love that.”
The Don’t Let Go actress also spoke about working with Farmiga, who reprized her role as Sister Irene in the upcoming feature film.
Reid explained: “She’s brilliant… but there are a few scenes.” [that] She would do it and I would just shake my head and say, “You just killed that.” Good work. You’re amazing, girl!”
