North American John Michael Irmer, 69, has surrendered to the FBI and confessed to being the perpetrator of a crime that shocked American public opinion four decades ago, US prosecutors announced on Monday (11).

Irmer, who now lives in Oregon, said he raped and killed Susan Marcia Rose, whom he met at a Boston skating rink in 1979, with a hammer, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said.

Another man suspected of the violent crime was originally charged, but he was acquitted at trial in June 1981, according to a New York Post report.

Irmer casually walked into the FBI office in Portland last month and told agents that he had met a woman with red hair at a skating rink around Halloween, prosecutors said.

The couple entered a house that was being renovated at the time. He then took a hammer, hit her in the head, raped her and left her at the scene where she died from her injuries. The next day he fled to New York.

Investigation

Irmer also confessed to killing another person in the south of the country. The case is still under investigation and the information is being verified. The man was convicted in 1983 of robbing and murdering a drug dealer in San Francisco. He spent 30 years in prison for this crime.

“Nearly 44 years after losing her at such a young age, Susan Marcia Rose’s family and friends will finally have answers,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.

“This was a cold, brutal murder made worse by the fact that one person was charged and brought to justice and fortunately exonerated while the real killer has remained silent,” Hayden said.

“No matter how unsolved cases are resolved, it is always the answers that matter to those who have lived with pain and loss and so many distressing questions.”
