Shooting near American embassy in Lebanon, no casualties

Shots were reported near the American embassy in Lebanon in a Beirut suburb on Wednesday evening, without any fatalities, a spokesman told AFP on Thursday.

“At 10:37 p.m. (1937 GMT), shots were reported near the entrance to the US Embassy,” said embassy spokesman Jake Nelson.

“There were no injuries,” he added, noting that the embassy was “in close contact” with Lebanese security forces.

The complex that houses the American embassy is extremely secure and surrounded by Lebanese army roadblocks. It is located in Awkar, a suburb north of Beirut.

The incident coincided with the anniversary of the car bomb explosion outside the American embassy in the area in 1984, which left 11 people dead and dozens injured, which the embassy attributed to pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

The Chancellery was built in these premises north of Beirut after a suicide attack that destroyed the Chancellery in April 1983 and left 63 dead, in the middle of the civil war (1975-1990). The attack was claimed by Islamic Jihad, a group Washington says is linked to Hezbollah.
