War in Ukraine: Kiev attacks the heart of the Russian fleet in Sevastopol Euronews

The missile attack that damaged the Black Sea Fleet headquarters on Friday is the latest example of Ukraine’s intense pressure on a vulnerable Russian navy.

Ukraine continues its pressure on annexed Crimea. According to the peninsula’s Russian governor, Sevastopol was put on alert for about an hour after debris from intercepted missiles fell near a pier. The day before, the Russian fleet headquarters had been bombed by the Ukrainians. They claim that among the nine dead and 16 injured they count are high-ranking officials. Two Russian anti-aircraft missile systems and four artillery units were hit. The Russians only mention one missing person.

According to a pro-Ukrainian news channel on Telegram, which reports on developments on the peninsula, loud bangs were also heard near Vilnius in northern Crimea, followed by clouds of smoke. The flight alert lasted almost an hour and ferry traffic in the region was also interrupted.

The Ukrainian military also said Russia fired 15 Iranian-made Shahed drones over the Zaporizhia and Dnipro regions. Other Russian attacks in Kherson Oblast also reportedly killed one person and injured three others, according to local authorities.

Ukraine is currently conducting its counteroffensive in this region. General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, who is leading the operations, says his forces have broken through at Werbowe and predicts an even bigger breakthrough.
