One of Ecuador’s most dangerous criminals, José Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as Fito, who is accused of ordering the brutal murder of candidate Fernando Villavivencio, defied the system while in prison and released a video to demonstrate his power over the state, who couldn’t reach him… even kept him in the maximum security prison La Roca for a month.
In August, Fito was transferred from the Regional Deprivation of Liberty Center Number 8 in Guayaquil to La Roca as part of a major operation involving 4,000 police and soldiers. But his imprisonment in the maximum security prison was shortlived and now he is back in his favorite prison. To celebrate the transfer, the clip was released last week.
“El Corrido del León” is performed by the duo Mariachi Bravo and Queen Michelle, Fito’s daughter, and recorded in three settings: a bar, a field with horses and the regional prison where Fito is serving a 34year sentence for murder, drug trafficking, organized crime, robbery and weapons possession.
“He is the boss and the boss, gentlemen, is Adolfo Macías Villamar,” an excerpt from the clip says.
After the video was released, the authority in charge of Ecuador’s prison system said in a note that “recorders or audiovisual producers were not authorized to enter the prison facility,” which is why it acknowledged that the images “may have been…” made from illegally imported equipment won.”
For Fernando Carrión, security analyst, the video is an attempt to demonstrate “the victory” and the strength of Los Choneros: “The text tries to legitimize Fito as someone who can lead the pacification of all the criminal gangs that are spreading in the country .”
The leader of Los Choneros is trying to erase the image of the subjugated criminal that many Ecuadorians saw with astonishment on the day he was transferred to the maximum security prison. And he also tries to avoid accusations of possible intellectual authorship of the crime. Days before his death, Villavicencio reported threats from Fito.
And chose a Mexican corrido [gênero musical usado por traficantesdaquele país]which, for Carrión, aims to “mark the relationship and bond between Los Choneros and the Sinaloa Cartel.”
“He loves his family / and his friends very much, not to mention / for them he would give his life / even more if they would show him loyalty,” says other verses. “Fito is a boss, gentlemen / he is the boss of bosses / he is the leader of Los Choneros.”
Corridos are an important part of Mexico’s musical history. They were born in the 19th century, during the Mexican Revolution, and in them the deeds of heroes were told. Over time, they were abused by human traffickers.
“Over time, the corridos have called for conflict, a break with the establishment, and this is being taken up by the traffickers to propose a break, but this time against the entire system they face,” the analyst adds . “In this case it is directed against the government and, above all, against a prison system that is permeated by criminal gangs.”
“With great intelligence / He decided to retire and make a lot of money,” go the lyrics, which also describe the amounts of drugs, the corruption in the justice system and the places where drugs were taken. “In Manabí, Santa Elena / and part of Los Ríos / I operated / and I moved without noise / in the small planes I sent the kilos / from Colombia and Ecuador to Sinaloa I sent their orders.”
