In her memoir, she revealed that she had an abortion in her early 20s due to an unplanned pregnancy, not long after landing the lead role in Spike Lee’s 2004 film “She Hate Me.”

“At first I had a lot of trouble with whether or not I should publish my abortion story… But I felt like it was really important for me to share this,” she said.

“This story had so much to do with my understanding of myself and the world throughout my career,” she said.

“It’s just so important to me that abortion isn’t a bad word and that my abortion isn’t another item on the list of things I’m ashamed of,” she added.
