Four years after a control center was relocated from Montreal, Quebec, to Edmonton, Alberta, approximately fifty customer service positions are now at risk of moving to Western Canada.
“I don’t think our members want to move to the West,” Mario Laroche, regional representative of Unifor Council 4000, told the Journal after La Presse first reported fears on Monday.
“We’ve seen about 10 positions on job boards,” he said, causing concern among union members in Quebec.
In the Journal, Mario Laroche said he fears moving these positions to Western Canada will weaken CN’s French-language services.
“If the customer calls to find out where his car is, where his raw material is, he risks having difficulty getting an answer,” he whispered.
In 2019, Le Journal already reported that labor force growth outside Quebec was much faster.
Repeated in the same film
Three years ago, Le Journal reported on the anger of the Bloc Québécois following the CN’s decision to close its control center for 60 workers in Montreal in favor of Alberta, hence the impression of being in the same movie.
Recall that in June 2022, CN’s CEO refused to apologize for the lack of French skills at the top of the company.
As of Monday afternoon, CN had not responded to the Journal’s questions.
