USA: Police kill driver after vehicle crashes into Chinese consulate

San Francisco police said Monday that they shot and killed a man whose vehicle was violently driven into the city’s Chinese consulate.

The suspect “violently stormed into the administration hall of our consulate, seriously threatening the lives of the teams and people on site and causing serious damage to the building,” a consulate spokesman said in a statement.

“The suspect was subdued by the police,” he continued, condemning this “violent attack” and calling for an investigation to be opened.

Kathryn Winters, a San Francisco police sergeant, told reporters that “officers … made contact with the suspect and an officer-involved shooting ensued.”

Despite the efforts of police and emergency services on site, the victim was pronounced dead in hospital without any information about his identity.

Images posted on social media, which AFP was unable to authenticate, show a vehicle inside the building and police officers pointing their guns toward the driver’s door as people flee.

According to Ms. Winters, an investigation is ongoing by the San Francisco Police Department and the State Department.

Many residents of Chinese descent, many from Taiwan, call San Francisco home.
