Reform movements, two state solution, Poland | France | 13 10 2023 | 6:55 pm

1. Reform movements in Rome

Numerous activists from the “We Are Church” platform came to Rome to monitor the progress of the Synod of Bishops on site. They do not have high expectations of a real push for reform in the Catholic Church, even if they see progress in the global synodal process. The Synod may be the last chance to give the Church a future. -Design: Alexander Hecht

2. Vatican: For Israel’s right to self-defense and a two-state solution

Vatican Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin condemned the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel “in the strongest possible terms” and as “inhumane”; At the same time, he called for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Like Pope Francis on Wednesday, the Vatican’s chief diplomat emphasized Israel’s right to self-defense “within the framework of proportionality” and without endangering the civilian population in Gaza. Furthermore, Parolin emphasized the Vatican’s willingness to mediate between Israel and Palestinian militants to secure the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

3. Poland: Solidarity with Ukrainian refugees is waning

Around 34 thousand Ukrainians come to Poland every month and register as refugees. Until now, they have enjoyed many privileges, such as free access to the job market and schools, medical care and financial support. But since the outbreak of the so-called “grain conflict” and in the run-up to next Sunday’s elections, the Polish government has adopted a different tone towards Ukrainian refugees. NGOs are alarmed. -Design: Martin Motylewicz
