This weekend’s box office for the concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was expected to be unpredictable, and now that estimate is being confirmed.

Industry estimates say the film grossed $37.8 million as of Friday, but AMC is expecting a higher figure of $39 million. Both figures include the $2.8 million in previews announced at the last minute on Thursday night.

In any case, that makes it the second-biggest October opening day of all time, behind only “Joker” ($39.3 million) and ahead of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” ($37.4 million) and “Halloween.” ” from 2018 ($33 million).

Now the overall forecasts for the weekend seem to be weakening after the overly rosy forecasts of the last few weeks. The three-day domestic Friday-Sunday haul is now revised down slightly, allowing for a potential three-day haul worth $90 million to $109 million.

Wherever it lands in this range, it would give the film its second-best opening in October, once again sandwiched between the aforementioned films about a demented clown and a flesh-eating symbiote.

At the moment, no one is sure how far ahead the film is, with predictions for a drop on Saturday ranging from as little as 1% to as much as 20%. Even at the lowest end of expectations, it will still be the best opening since “Barbie” and the biggest opening ever for a film distributed by a theater chain.

The film also earned a rare A+ CinemaScore in final polls, joining 100% critics/99% audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and 84/100 critics/8.3/10 audience ratings on Metacritic.
