Hurricane Tammy has strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane as it continues to circle over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean on a track that could eventually bring tropical storm conditions to Bermuda this weekend.

What’s new on Hurricane Tammy?

According to the latest bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Tammy is located approximately 540 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and has maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour, making it Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.

The NHC says Tammy could see a slight strengthening on Wednesday, followed by a weakening later in the week. The NHC said Tammy was expected to become a strong post-tropical cyclone by Thursday.

According to the latest NHC report, Hurricane Tammy is moving northeast at about 10 miles per hour.

A turn to the north is expected later on Wednesday, followed by a slower movement to the northwest on Thursday and Friday.

Although Tammy is hundreds of miles from the Caribbean islands, the storm is still producing large waves that are hitting parts of the Leeward Islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

These waves continue to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

The region experienced gusty winds, rough seas and heavy rain as the core of the storm moved just a few miles east of many of these islands.

Strong winds continued into early Sunday morning before the late-season hurricane moved northwest from the islands.
