Lula calls for an end to the veto right at the UN: "That’s crazy" Power360

PTista denied that the Brazilian resolution on war in the Middle East was rejected since it had a majority of votes in favor; The text was rejected by the USA

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) described this Friday (October 27, 2023) the veto power of the permanent members of the UN Security Council as “crazy”. According to Lula, the resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas presented by Brazil was not rejected because it was supported by the majority in the body.

The proposal had 12 votes in favor, 1 against and two abstentions, but was not adopted as the only dissenting vote was cast by the United States, which is a permanent member of the body and has veto power.

“I saw a headline in a newspaper here: ‘Brazil’s proposal is rejected.'” In fact, that’s a lie […] It was rejected because of something crazy, namely the veto power of the UN Security Council, which I radically oppose. This is not democratic,” he explained at a breakfast with journalists at the Palácio do Planalto.

Lula also once again defended reforming the Council to include more permanent members. The issue has been on Lula’s agenda since his first term in office, but there is currently no prospect of effective change in the committee.

“It is the five Security Council countries that make weapons, sell weapons and wage war. It’s the contradiction. That’s why we want to change the council,” he said.

Brazil occupies the position of rotating member of the body for the biennium 20222023 and chairs the Security Council in the month of October.

The first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, sat on the president’s left side. On Lula’s right sat the Minister of the Presidency Communications Secretariat, Paulo Pimenta. Also sitting at the right end of the main table was the Secretary of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Márcio Macêdo, and at the left end was press secretary José Chrispiniano, who coordinated the selection of which journalists could ask Lula questions.

Here are the outlets that asked questions, in the order in which they were asked:

  • economic value;
  • Brazil247;
  • Portal;
  • Diary of the Center of the World;
  • TV Globo;
  • Folha de S.Paulo.

The coffee was scheduled for 11 a.m., but Lula arrived at 11:44 a.m., accompanied by Janja and the Secretary of the Secretariat for Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, who left right at the start of the coffee.

Pimenta began the meeting with a short speech summarizing the government’s main measures in the first year of Lula’s third term. He said the government’s original goal was to restart discontinued or suspended social programs. He also stated that the government is doing everything in its power to expel all Brazilians who are in Israel and the Gaza Strip and want to leave the conflict region.

Over coffee, Lula reiterated his government’s resolve, saying that “there are no Brazilians in Israel or Gaza.” On the occasion of Lula’s birthday, the minister also gave a round of applause.

The places at the approximately 10 meter long table were determined in advance by the Planalto team. All seats were marked with the names of the journalists and the vehicle they work for. Also on the tables was breakfast with individual portions of fruit (grapes, mango, papaya and melon), cold cuts such as salami, turkey breast and cheese, carrot and cornmeal cake, a small sandwich and a basket of bread with cheese bread and croissants. There was coffee, water and orange juice.

At the end of the meeting, Pimenta asked everyone to sing the congratulatory song for Lula. The president jokingly said he hoped he had received a gift from the journalists, but that did not happen.

The president did not take a photo with all the journalists at his side, as is traditional at such meetings. Pimenta justified that the picture would not be taken in this way since Lula is still recovering from hip surgery and crowds must be avoided to avoid the risk of a contract of any kind that could injure him.

However, an official photo was taken with Lula and Janja standing in the foreground and the journalists arranged behind them in the places where they were sitting.

The first breakfast with the media took place on January 12th. On this occasion, Lula met with reporters who cover daily life at the Palácio do Planalto. In Brasília they are known as the “sectorists” of the presidency. The main topic at the time was the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, which took place on January 8th. 38 journalists were received, including the Power360.

On February 7, Lula received journalists from at least 40 leftwing media outlets at the palace. In PT groups they are called “independent media”. On April 6, Lula received columnists and writers from media companies.

Lula promised to hold another breakfast with journalists by the end of 2023 to provide an overview of his first year in power.
