Hamburg Airport in northern Germany has been closed since the night of Saturday the 4th, when a man drove a car into the gate and parked the car near a plane. Flights have been canceled until the case, which is still ongoing after more than 10 hours of negotiations, is resolved.
According to German police, the 35yearold man was carrying his fouryearold daughter in the vehicle, possibly after kidnapping her as part of a custody dispute with her mother. According to preliminary information, the man, who comes from the German state of Lower Saxony, wanted to bring his daughter to Turkey, where he originally comes from. According to the police, the negotiations with the man took place in Turkish.
A psychologist has been negotiating with the attacker on site for hours, without success. The invasion took place at 8:30 p.m. German time.
The German authorities also believe that the man is armed and may have explosives of an unknown type. “Our top priority is protecting the child. To the best of our knowledge, the child is physically fine,” police said.
Passengers on planes near the incident were evacuated and taken to a hotel to await further information. All flights this Sunday have been canceled or postponed, and the access roads to the site have been closed. (Estadão Conteúdo)
