A tourist from Mato Grosso do Sul was killed in the early hours of this Sunday (19) by two men during an attempted robbery on Copacabana beach, in the southern zone of Rio. The suspects had previous convictions for other crimes and two of them were arrested redhanded last Friday (17). They were released at a custody hearing on Saturday (18), less than 12 hours before the murder.

The victim is Gabriel Mongenot Santana Milhomem Santos, 25 years old, born in Mato Grosso do Sul and lived in Minas Gerais. He was in the city for the concert of the singer Taylor Swift and went to the performance scheduled for this Sunday (19) in Engenhão, in the northern zone of the city, far from the crime scene.

The crime occurred around 3 a.m. The suspects stole a vehicle key and two cell phones.

Two of the suspects were arrested by military police after the crime. One of the prisoners even had a prison release document in his pocket. Police are investigating the involvement of a third man.

One of them, Anderson Henriques Brandão, confessed to involvement in the crime. He has 14 previous convictions.

The other inmate is Alan Ananias Cavalcante. He has previous convictions for robbery, theft, drug trafficking and a murder in 2008.

Agents are searching for Jonathan Batista Barbosa, who was identified by witnesses as being involved in the crime. He has 10 traffic tickets.

Alan was identified as the perpetrator of the theft of 80 chocolate bars last Friday. When he was surrounded by Copacabana Presente agents, he handed the bag to an accomplice, Jonathan. But both were eventually arrested. They were taken to the 12th DP (Hilário de Gouveia) and caught redhanded.

The custody hearing took place this Saturday at around 12:40 p.m. in Benfica. In it, Judge Priscila Macuco Ferreira decided to release the duo, noting that they were not allowed to stay away from the state for more than seven days during the course of the trial and were not allowed to enter the chain’s stores.

According to the investigation, the three have been committing crimes in the Copacabana district for years.

According to the Prime Minister, two agents found the victim dead near the water level at the corner of Avenida Atlântica and Rua Figueiredo de Magalhães.

Police called the fire department, who confirmed Gabriel was dead. According to initial information, the victim was accompanied by a group of friends in Lapa. They then drove to Copacabana in a rental car and were walking on the sand when three men came up to them and announced the robbery.

The Capital Homicide Police Station and Military Police are on the street searching for the other man identified as responsible for the crime.
