The story of this last title
The creation of “Now And Then” began in the late 1970s when John Lennon recorded a demo with vocals and piano at his home in New York’s Dakota Building. In 1994, his wife Yoko Ono Lennon gave the recording to Paul, George and Ringo, along with John’s demos for “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, both of which were completed as new songs by the Beatles in 1995 and 1996 as singles in the frame of the project “The Beatles Anthology”.
Around the same time, Paul, George and Ringo also recorded new parts and finished mixing “Now And Then” with producer Jeff Lynne. At this point, technical limitations made it impossible to separate John’s vocals and piano to get the clean, uncluttered mix needed to complete the song. “Now And Then” was shelved in the hopes that it would be revisited one day.
Fast forward to 2021 and the release of the Peter Jackson-directed documentary series The Beatles: Get Back, which stunned viewers with its award-winning audio and film restoration. Using WingNut Films’ MAL audio technology, Jackson’s team unmixed the film’s mono soundtrack and managed to isolate the instruments and vocals, as well as all of the individual voices from the Beatles’ conversations. This achievement paved the way for the new 2022 Revolver mix, straight from the four-track master tapes.
Then the question became: What could we do with the “Now And Then” demo? Peter Jackson and his sound team, led by Emile de la Rey, applied the same technique to John’s original home recording, preserving the clarity and integrity of his original vocal performance by separating it from the piano.
In 2022, Paul and Ringo set about finishing the song. In addition to John’s vocals, “Now And Then” features electric and acoustic guitar recorded by George in 1995, Ringo’s new drum part, and Paul’s bass, guitar and piano, matching John’s original playing. John. Paul added a George-inspired slide guitar solo; He and Ringo also contributed vocals to the chorus.
In Los Angeles, Paul led a recording session at Capitol Studios for the melancholic and typically Beatles string arrangement, written by Giles Martin, Paul and Ben Foster. Paul and Giles also added a wonderfully subtle finishing touch: backing vocals from the original recordings of “Here, There And Everywhere”, “Eleanor Rigby” and “Because”, incorporated into the album using techniques perfected during production new song was integrated. from the show and album LOVE. The final track was produced by Paul and Giles and mixed by Spike Stent.
