Sony is announcing the release date of the PlayStation 5 Slim this evening, but the few independent tests published so far beat Sony’s new console. The differences to the PlayStation 5 standard
While Microsoft is using the Xbox Series only because it doesn’t have a disc drive, the PlayStation 5 Digital appears thinner than its big sister and therefore looks more elegant. This console is always accompanied by a Sony DualSense controller, which allows you to have the most immersive gaming experience possible thanks to its haptic feedback.
From a technical perspective, nothing changes. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is also designed to run natively in 4K at 60 FPS, while Microsoft’s fully dematerialized console only runs at 1440p and 60 FPS. This is a good point, as the gaming experience does not change compared to the standard edition. The PS5 Digital also runs an 825GB SSD, leaving just 667GB of game storage, but also has a second M.2 SSD slot to expand capacity.
An equally entertaining gaming experience
The advantage of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is the completely dematerialized game. If you’ve had PlayStation games before, all you need to do is repatriate them from your PlayStation Plus account. On the other hand, if you already had physical games, they will no longer be useful and you will have to return to the checkout to enjoy them again if the backups have not been saved to the PlayStation cloud. This is one of the great sorrows of becoming completely dematerialized, but it at least allows one to sort out one’s affairs.
Like Microsoft with its Xbox Game Pass, the entire richness of the completely dematerialized experience is based on Sony’s online service PlayStation Plus. For the price of a monthly, quarterly or annual subscription, this service offers access to a catalog of several hundred PS5 and PS4 games and even offers a selection of free games every month. Finally, Sony recently added the Sony Pictures Core application to the PS5, an SVOD platform that works in rentals and offers access to a catalog of around 2,000 films. Even if the Blu-ray player is missing from the PS5 Digital, the multimedia experience is still possible.
