From pop stars to presidents, toys to tech moguls, this year’s nine finalists cover a wide range of careers, fields and legacies. They are:

Hollywood striker: Striking Hollywood screenwriters and actors demanding better working conditions brought production of numerous TV shows and films to a halt. It was reportedly the longest strike by actors against major film and television studios ever and the second longest strike in the history of the Writers Guild of America.

Xi Jinping: Chinese President Xi Jinping completed an unprecedented third term in 2023, making him one of the country’s most powerful modern leaders. He placed second in the 2017 Person of the Year vote and has been named more than ten times to the TIME100 list, which names 100 of the world’s most influential people.

Taylor Swift: The Grammy Award-winning artist continued to break world records in 2023 with the debut of her “Eras Tour” and concert film, as well as the release of two additional newly recorded albums. She also achieved billionaire status. Swift previously appeared on the cover of the 2017 Person of the Year issue alongside other celebrities and activists who spoke out against sexual violence.

Sam Altman: The CEO of OpenAI, which developed the groundbreaking artificial intelligence program ChatGPT, recently made numerous headlines for his brief exit from the company and his subsequent return. Altman was featured on the 2023 TIME100 and the first-ever TIME100 AI list.

Trump accuser: In 2023, former President Donald Trump became the only president in American history to be impeached for crimes. He is charged with a total of more than 90 charges in four separate cases in three states (and Washington, DC). Trump is accused of manipulating election results, illegally storing confidential documents and falsifying business records.

Barbie: Greta Gerwig’s 2023 live-action film “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, quickly became a cultural phenomenon and the highest-grossing film of the year, grossing $1.4 billion. The success led to a worldwide resurgence in popularity of Mattel’s iconic line of dolls, from the toys themselves to countless merchandise items.

Wladimir Putin: Almost two years after the invasion of Ukraine began, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demonstrate the extent of his power and influence. The Wagner Uprising in 2023 ended briefly when the mercenary group withdrew after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko reached an agreement. Putin, who has been president since 1999, was the Person of the Year in 2007 and has appeared on the TIME100 list several times.

King Charles III: Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the end of 2022, King Charles III became King Charles III. crowned in May 2023. His reign remained relatively free of controversy and was primarily marked by efforts to strengthen relations between the four nations and the myriad ethnic and religious groups that make up the United Kingdom. His mother, the late Queen, was named Person of the Year in 1952 when she ascended the throne.

Jerome Powell: Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has played a key role in managing the soaring inflation that has plagued the U.S. in recent years. In 2023, Americans could finally see a decline as Powell continues to work to raise interest rates without triggering a recession, known as a “soft landing.” He was included in the TIME100 again in 2019 and 2020.

TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year will be announced Wednesday morning.
