Separatist leader: dissolution of Nagorno Karabakh is null and void news

The leader of Armenian separatists, Samvel Shahramanyan, annulled the dissolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic that he himself ordered. There is no legally binding document requiring the dissolution of government institutions, Shahramanyan said today at a meeting with other officials in the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

On September 28, Shahramanyan announced the dissolution of Nagorno-Karabakh on January 1, 2024, under military pressure from Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive in the Caucasus region on September 19. Just a day later, pro-Armenian fighters in the region had to admit defeat.

Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan under international law, but until September predominantly ethnic Armenians lived there. Almost all of the region's former 120,000 Armenian residents have now fled to Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh declared independence after a referendum in 1991. This was not recognized internationally and was boycotted by the Azerbaijani minority.
