Prince William and Kate Middleton spend Christmas apart due to unusual tradition; understand

It's nothing new that the British royal family has a daily routine full of rules, rituals and formalities and Christmas is no exception. A tradition that attracts attention on this date prevents Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton from spending the morning of December 25th together.

During this time, the couple separates to fulfill a schedule of royal protocols. While the Princess of Wales eats breakfast alone, William meets with other nobles in the palace dining room for the first meal of the day. After breakfast they go to mass in the church of Santa Madalena. The couple meet for the first time at lunchtime after attending another religious ceremony at 11am.

There is no clear answer as to the origin of this formality, but aside from William and Kate, all other couples of British royalty also follow the same protocol on Christmas Day.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady, who worked for the royal family for fifteen years, told the Mirror that women usually eat a light breakfast of fruit and toast in their rooms. The men gather in the living room for a heartier meal that lasts about two hours and includes eggs, bacon, mushrooms and fish.

Although some customs are considered strange, the royal family also has more common traditions. They exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, as Prince Harry revealed in his autobiography “What's Left.” According to information on the monarchy's official website, members typically place their gifts on tables and exchange them at tea time. Christmas cards are also part of the celebration! The items are sent to relatives, friends and even government officials.
