Heat waves, blizzards and large storms can cause more than 300 million people will suffer from energy shortages in 2024 in large parts of North America. The warning was issued by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), an international regulator of the power grid in the United States and Canada.

Nerc assumes that the risk of energy insecurity will not be eliminated until 2028 Climate changes that are occurring more and more frequently with humancaused global warming.

According to a NERC report, most regions in Canada and the United States do not have enough energy to withstand climate extremes. Currently, there is no technology that can withstand overloading during severe cold or heat events or due to failures in transmission and distribution networks.

Due to the weakening of the grid, residents in some areas may even be without electricity during normal weather.

Most regions are at high or very high risk of suffering from energy shortages, Johan Cavert of the Washingtonbased environmental institution Niskanen Center told New Scientist magazine in his commentary on the report. New York and the American West Coast would be areas of greatest vulnerability.
