Review of 2023: The cinema year in numbers

What better than a whirlwind of numbers (and sometimes even billions of dollars) to remember the key moments of the 2023 cinema year?

$2.39 billion

The year was undoubtedly marked by the global phenomenon:BARBENHEIMER». Originally intended as a joke to highlight the release of Greta Gervig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, two completely different feature films, on the same day (July 21), Barbenheimer went viral and commercial due to the enthusiasm of moviegoers that brought the films to the international arena Box office grossed $2.39 billion, with Barbie surpassing Oppenheimer with earnings of $1.44 billion versus $951.99 million. It is therefore no coincidence that the organization of the Cannes Film Festival announced in December that Greta Gervig will be president of the jury in 2024.

14 women

According to a survey conducted by the Mediapart website in April, GÉRARD DEPARDIEU was accused of sexual violence by 13 women, and a 14th filed a complaint in December. The actor with more than 200 films was also the subject of the program Complément d'investigation, broadcast in France on December 7, in which we rarely hear him utter misogynistic and obscene words. The Legault government has since decided to remove him from the Order of Quebec and France is exploring the possibility of withdrawing his Legion of Honor.

Losses of $149 million

The year was bad for Disney Studios as the company continued to rack up losses in its “movie theater” division. When releasing third-quarter financial results, Disney boss Bob Iger reported a $149 million loss in revenue as a result FLOP from Haunted Mansion, released July 28th. We also note that since… 2019, none of the feature films from the company founded by Walt Disney have exceeded the billion dollar sales mark.

The American Note (Killers of the Flower Moon) by Martin Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro wins the prize LONGEST MOVIE of the year with a duration of 3 hours 26 minutes, followed by Oppenheimer with a duration of 3 hours. But that's nothing compared to “Gone With the Wind,” which at 3 hours and 42 minutes is the longest feature film to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture.
