Steven Spielberg is one of the most acclaimed science fiction directors of all time, and many of his works (and the works he inspired) fit into one of gamers' favorite books: Ready, player one. Written by Ernest Cline, the novel was a huge success and it wasn't long before the legendary director of “ET” and “War of the Worlds” adapted it into a film.
A flop in the cinema?
Just a year after its release, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to Ready Player One to bring the story to the big screen in 2010. The real surprise, however, was Steven Spielberg's involvement in the making of the film, as he constructed a story from numerous films in which the legendary filmmaker was involved as a director, screenwriter or producer or which only saw the light of day after one of his films .
This is true. When Spielberg became involved in the project, one of his first instructions was:exclude any direct reference to his films, in order to avoid a kind of creative “conflict of interest”. Nevertheless, the pursuit of the Tyrannosaurus Rex à la Jurassic Park or the appearance of the Delorean and the sound effects of Back to the Future were retained in the final version.
Ready Player One is too one of the largest collections of references and Easter eggs in cinemaAlthough mentions of Spielberg's films have been excluded, there are references to films such as The Shining, King Kong, Star Wars or Godzilla, mentioned video games such as Halo, Overwatch, Sonic or Mortal Kombat or even characters such as Batman or Superman.
And despite all this, the film failed to eclipse the biggest release of 2018: Avengers Infinity War. The film was released about a month before the third part of The Avengers, but no one could escape the hype about the Marvel heroes' fight against Thanos. Ready Player One has arrived Ranked 12th at the box office with over $580 million in 2018compared to the $2 billion that Infinity War grossed.
