Her character will be appearing on screens for the first time in August straight from a stint on the cruise lines and is quickly finding a foothold and a job behind the Rovers’ bar.

Jodie said: “I know I sound like a slob but being on Coronation Street has been on my wish list since I was little.

“It’s an honor, it’s really a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long. And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream piece.’

She continued: “Can’t wait for you all to meet the funny and cheeky Glenda, George Shuttleworth’s sister. I already love Tony Maudsley what a guy!

“Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve wracking experiences you will have and everyone has been just so delightfully kind, kind and welcoming. It was and is everything I expected and more.”

Blackpool-born Jodie rose to fame when she won BBC talent show I’d do Anything in 2008 and played the role of Nancy in Oliver in the West End.

She had a highly successful theatrical career as Miss Hannigan in Annie and appeared in One Man Two Guvnors at the Haymarket Theater in London.

She took on the title role in Shirley Valentine’s UK theater tour and recently played the lead role of Kelly in the world premiere of Kay Mellor’s musical Fat Friends.

Jodie also played the role of Helen in the National Theater production of A Taste of Honey, a performance inspired by early episodes of Coronation Street.

She will use her cruise ship experience to play entertainer Glenda, having spent eight months in 2001 as one of four principal entertainers on a 19-person crew aboard the Disney Wonder.

Producer Iain MacLeod said: “Arriving fresh off the cruise lines with a touch of the exotic, Glenda is quickly making best friends and foes alike.

“The character is a lot of fun and reminiscent of classic Coronation Street women from the old days. Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her on board.

“From the moment she walked on set she has felt a lot like Corrie and I think viewers are going to love her.”
