Italian M5S leaders disagree over arms sales to Ukraine

Alessandra Todde, vice-president of this group, has criticized the attitude of one of its leaders, current Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, towards an M5S proposal to halt wartime supplies to this Eastern European nation.

On June 19, this party published a draft parliamentary resolution that caused heated controversy, noting that the supply of arms leads to an escalation of the conflict, making it difficult to resolve it diplomatically.

The current Italian foreign minister stated that this proposal jeopardizes the security of that nation by diverting it from the position of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Current leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte, called an urgent meeting of the 14 members of his National Council on Sunday evening to discuss the matter, in which he said he was very saddened by Di Maio’s words.

It was agreed to maintain the initiative, but with a focus on stopping the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and finding a political solution, but not on stopping arms sales.

The parties of the governing coalition are debating the possible inclusion in a six-point draft resolution this Monday.

Formations clustered around Draghi’s team include the M5S, Forza Italia, the League, the Democratic Party, Italia Viva and Article One, representing a range of political positions, even opposing ones.

There was agreement on five of the issues relating to support for Ukraine’s integration into the EU, the revision of the Stability Pact and support for families and businesses affected by the war.

They also agree to adopt the plan to end the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, as well as proposals to strengthen the common bloc in the future.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi is due to table this text in Parliament next Tuesday before the European Council meets on June 23-24.
