After one season with the Buckeyes, Tony Skinn is reported to be leaving the program.
Ohio State’s assistant coach, who replaced Terry Johnson on Chris Holtmann’s team in May 2021, will join new Maryland head coach Kevin Willard in the offseason, according to InsideMDSports’ Jeff Ehrmann. Skinn, a Takoma Park, Maryland native, previously worked as Willard’s assistant at Seton Hall staff for three seasons before moving to Columbus last year.
Willard was officially hired in Maryland on Monday after 12 seasons at the helm of the Pirates program and is replacing interim head coach Danny Manning, who took over after the Terrapins parted ways with Mark Turgeon at the start of the 2021-22 season.
Now that Skinn is leaving Ohio State, Holtmann is reportedly set to replace two spots on his offseason staff as longtime assistant and offensive coordinator Ryan Pedon accepted the Illinois head coach job on March 4.
Although Skinn took Johnson’s place on the team last offseason, he did not take on the same role as Johnson’s defensive coordinator duties were taken over by Jake Dibler and Pedon continued to manage offense. However, after Pedon’s departure, Dibler would take over many of his old duties.
This leaves room for both a defensively oriented assistant and an additional coach who can specialize in scouting and development, among other things, as Skinn’s role required last year.
Holtmann said on March 7 that he had already received “a ton of calls” about Pedon’s opening, but would not delve into the hiring process until the offseason. But after losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Holtmann will now start looking for two new assistants to fill his staff before next year.
