The San Francisco 49ers’ trading market for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t go well. With the first wave of leeway in the books, most felt that a skilled passer would now be on a different list. That did not happen. Garoppolo and his $25+ million salary remain on the 49ers payroll, and one NFL insider isn’t sure that will change anytime soon.

Most teams in need of quarterbacks have hired rookies. The few who remain are in no hurry to overpay for the expensive Garoppolo, who is only two weeks away from shoulder surgery.

There was a rumor from Pro Football Talk that general manager John Lynch was telling teams that the 49ers had an offer of two picks in the second round, likely in an attempt to generate more interest in Garoppolo. Of course, if this were a real offer, San Francisco would probably count their blessings and accept them. At this point, that seems like a significant overpayment for a quarterback who can’t even throw until most of the initial offseason work is done.

This report from Pro Football Talk has also surfaced in front of everything from Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts shocker.

“I haven’t heard of it,” NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport said of the rumors on The Pat McAfee Show. “I mean, I think that’s the price they’re going to do it. I didn’t hear it, and I look around and think, “Who could that be?” I mean, they’re not going to trade him for Seattle, I don’t think. I don’t believe the Panthers made that offer.

“Anyone trading Jimmy G right now, fresh out of surgery? I’m still not sure about this, so I think that if they had such an offer, they would accept it. Lynch is not a big bluster. Do not lie. He’s a pretty normal dude. It’s hard for me to imagine that he would have said it if he really didn’t have it.”

Although Rapoport doubts the veracity of the rumors, he believes that Garoppolo will remain with the 49ers in 2022.

“I’ll tell you what, the longer we’ve been at this and Jimmy G is still with the Niners, I think they could keep him,” Rapoport continued. “I mean, last year he took them to the playoffs. I know it wasn’t perfect, but would it be the craziest thing in the world to leave him and let Trey Lance study for another year? 49ers.

This is probably not the sound that 49ers fans were hoping for right now. They can’t wait to see the page turned from the Garoppolo era to the Trey Lance era.

Rapoport added, “I just don’t see a place for him (Garoppolo).”

H/t TheSFNiners for the find.

Rapoport: Nothing expected from Colts in exchange for 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

NFL insider Ian Rapoport, speaking on the NFL Total Access network, provided an update on the status of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. And the update is that there is no update. While many hope the exchange is inevitable, Rapoport says that is not the case. The 49ers are reportedly in talks with teams. However, most believe that San Francisco is looking for more than potential trading partners are willing to offer. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the favorite to get Garoppolo until it was announced that they had agreed to a deal with Mitchell Trubisky. “The Pittsburgh Steelers were involved in trade talks between Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers,” Rapoport said. “Obviously it won’t happen.

Florio: It’s possible 49ers guard Trey Lance could ‘take the league by storm’ in 2022

The media is still trying to predict who San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will become. Nobody but the 49ers has seen him in 2021. Last year’s overall pick third-place kicked off in just two games, replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and adding a few scattered reps here and there. A total of 178 shots were taken last season. This is hardly enough to give a final assessment of a player or accurately predict a young quarterback’s future in the NFL. Although people are trying to do it. Some look at the limited sample size and say Lance doesn’t look ready. It is said that he would not have been able to take over the starting role after a couple of games that had moments of ups and downs. Then in the off-season, there was talk that Lance was not ready and that his development was slowing down.

The commanders are traded for Carson Wentz; Colts could be in the mix for Jimmy Garoppolo of the 49ers

As expected, the Washington Commanders, in need of defensemen, were traded for a new signalman. No, that’s not San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Many speculated that Washington might be interested in a 30-year-old experienced passer, but instead the team chose Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. An NFL insider reports that the Commanders are believed to have conceded two third-round picks to Wentz. Sources say the Colts are trading QB Carson Wentz to Washington for a package of packages believed to include two third-round picks.

Mortensen: Jimmy Garoppolo’s QB 49ers could be an option for Browns

It looks like quarterback Baker Mayfield’s time with the Cleveland Browns is coming to an end. Whether or not the Browns get Houston Texans quarterback Deshawn Watson probably won’t change. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (via Will Brinson of CBS Sports), Cleveland is “breaking up” with Mayfield no matter what happens to Watson. The Browns reportedly “want a grown-up” in the quarterback position. Ouch. Most likely, these are the words of the Mortensen, not the Browns. Of course, this may convey what the organization is thinking as it may be preparing to part ways with Mayfield, the player selected No. 1 overall in 2018.
