US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the government led by Joe Biden had officially ruled that the Russian military had committed war crimes in Ukraine. The assessment, he said in a statement, was based on a “careful analysis” of public and intelligence sources on the Russian invasion. The US will share information with allies, partners and international institutions tasked with investigating allegations of war crimes and against humanity, Blinken said.
“Today I am able to announce that the US government estimates, based on the information currently available, that members of the Russian armed forces committed war crimes in Ukraine. Our rating is based on a careful review of available information from public and intelligence sources. As with any suspected criminal offence, a court with jurisdiction over the criminal offense ultimately has jurisdiction to determine criminal guilt in specific cases. The United States government will continue to investigate reports of war crimes and will share information gathered with allies, partners, and international institutions and organizations as appropriate. We commit to pursuing accountability using all available tools, including law enforcement,” Blinken said in full.
